SAMSA Category C – Up To 9m

The South African regulator, SAMSA has the responsibility of creating the developmental framework for the maritime industry. We focus on the small craft license which enables certified skippers to operate power vessels up to 9m in length. This is a day skipper course but can be extended to Coastal which includes a night rating.

Our philosophy is to train candidates in a manner that exceeds the requirements of the SAMSA controlled examination. Preservation of lives and preservation of assets is our objective and as such we provide the best instruction in both the theory and practical sessions.  We have developed our own in-house training manual to facilitate the instructional process.

SAMSA Category C up to 9m (no sea hours)

The course will be conducted over 7 days starting on a Monday in the Waterfront and we aim to ensure enough hours on board at sea are achieved and there is a day for SAMSA Short Range radio certificate.

Course Content

Day 1: Introduction and communication of what is required including examination preparation.

  • General Legal Requirements
  • Nautical Terms, Vessel construction, Equipment and General Seamanship

Day 2: Motors

  • Safety and Emergency
  • Rule of the Road (Colregs) and distress signals
  • Marine environment, weather, currents and pollution

Day 3: Radio and Penguin procedure

  • Elementary 1staid
  • Practical orientation of small vessels. Pre-launch and launch procedures. 6 hrs at sea.  Haul out and flushing procedures

Day 4: Navigation and chart work

  • Launch and complete Man Over Board procedures. 6 hrs at sea.  Haul out and flushing procedures

Day 5: Early Launch 8 hrs at sea

Day 6: Early launch 5 hours at sea. Theory and practical exam.

Day 7: SAMSA SRC

SAMSA Category C up to 9m (with 25 sea hours already acquired)

The course will be conducted over 8 days in order to ensure sufficient hours on board at sea are achieved and an alternate day for SAMSA Short Range radio certificate.

Day 1: Introduction and communication of what is required including examination preparation.

Day 2: Motors

  • Safety and Emergency
  • Rule of the Road (Collision regulations) and distress signals
  • Marine environment, weather, currents and pollution

Day 3: Practical orientation of small vessels. Pre-launch and launch procedures. Launch and complete Man Overboard procedures, haul out and flushing procedures

Day 4: Radio and Penguin procedure, Elementary 1st aid, Navigation and chart work.

Related products

Students stay on the boat during the RYA Competent Crew, Day Skipper & Yachtmaster Practical courses to get a real feel for onboard living and is a mandatory requirement. A stipend for essentials (tea, coffee, cereal, milk, etc) is included in the course price. During the theory week and STCW, students have the option of staying at our Academy in the Waterfront.

For practical courses we ask that students bring a sleeping bag, towel, toiletries, change of clothes, and suitable wet weather gear. Sunglasses and sunscreen are also a good idea.

For the theory course students will need a 2B pencils, a pen, a notebook and where possible, their own Portland plotter and dividers (we can also loan to the student). We can also help with the purchase of any of these materials.

For STCW you will need your Passport or ID book on day one of your course. You will also need to wear old clothes for the fire fighting (MFF) element, for Personal Safety Training (PST) you will need swimwear, a towel and a set of clothes to get in the pool with.

PRACTICAL sailing courses start with a briefing at the school, 11 Portswood Road at 8.30am.

THEORY courses take place at the school and commence at 8.30am

STCW training takes place in the Cape Town foreshore, training starts promptly at 8.30am

STEWARDESS training takes place in Gordons Bay and/or Ocean Star Sailing Academy

SAS Day Skipper

This is an intermediate Skippers course and we ensure that sufficient sea miles are achieved whilst on course in order to complete the training.

Course Description

This course is conducted over 13 days in order to ensure sufficient miles on board at sea are achieved and 1 day set aside for the mandatory SAMSA VHF Radio Certificate.
During this course students will learn the principles of boat handling, rules of the road, sailing, crewing, navigation and watch keeping. You will also learn rope work, knots, rigging, maintenance and seamanship skills.

After successful completion of the SAS Day Skipper course you will be able to operate a sail or power vessel under 24m at sea from sunrise to sunset. Local waters are defined as 15 nautical miles from the skippers home port, or 25 miles from their home port provided they are no more than 15 nautical miles from an approved safe haven. This licence will be recognised for use in South African waters.

A South African national or a South African resident with a valid South African ID document may apply for an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) should they require this licence for use in International waters.
