RYA Yachtmaster Exam Prep & Exam

The RYA Exam Prep for Sail is for candidates wishing to take the RYA Yachtmaster practical exam to obtain a yachtmaster coastal or offshore ticket.



Prepration for exam by polishing skills like Boat Handling, Man Overboard, Safety, Metorology, Skippering Ability, Blind Navigiation, Achoring under sail, Passage planning.

The RYA Exam Prep for Sail in Brief:
  • 10 days (2 days for exam)
  • Advanced preparatory course
  • 2 days RYA practical exam at end of course (£231 Offshore, £200 Coastal)
  • Sailing in Cape Town and Langebaan

Course Description

The RYA Exam for Sailing is an intensive 2 day practical test of the candidates competency. Candidates will be assessed by an independent RYA Examiner. A commanding knowledge of boat handling, passage making, collision regulations, meteorology, navigation and boat safety is expected. Candidates are responsible for providing documentation confirming that they have met the requirements necessary in order to be eligible for the exam.


TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE OFFSHORE EXAM, CANDIDATES REQUIRE THE FOLLOWING:
  • 50 days sea time
  • 5 days as skipper
  • 2500nm (on vessels under 24m in length)
  • 5 passages over 60nm
  • 2 overnight passages
  • 2 passages over 60nm as skipper
  • VHF ticket
  • First Aid Certificate
  • Commercial & STCW endorsements require further courses and a an ENG1 medical.
The RYA Exam Prep course assumes that students have taken the RYA Yachtmaster Theory course prior to embarking on the rya exam prep. While it is not mandatory we highly recommend that students do take the theory course.

General Course Information (All Courses)

  • Students stay on the boat during the multi-day practical courses in order to get a real feel for onboard living. A stipend for essentials (tea, coffee, cereal, milk, etc) is included in the course price. During the theory week and STCW, students have the option of staying at our Academy in the Waterfront.

  • For practical courses we ask that students bring a sleeping bag, towel, toiletries, change of clothes, and suitable wet weather gear. Sunglasses and sunscreenare also a good idea.

    For the theory course students will need a 2B pencils, a pen, a notebook and where possible, their own Portland plotter and dividers (we can also loan to the student). We can also help with the purchase of any of these materials.

    For STCW you will need your Passport or ID book on day one of your course. You will also need to wear old clothes for the fire fighting (MFF) element, for Personal Safety Training (PST) you will need swimwear, a towel and a set of clothes to get in the pool with.

  • PRACTICAL sailing courses start with a briefing at the school, 11 Portswood Road at 8.30am.
    THEORY courses take place at the school and commence at 8.30am
    STCW training takes place in the Cape Town foreshore, training starts promptly at 8.30am
    STEWARDESS training takes place in Gordon’s Bay and starts Mondays at 9.00am
