RYA VHF Radio Course

A radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures. The RYA VHF Radio Course is vital and goes hand in hand with courses like PB2 and Day Skipper. VHF also become a requirement when pursuing more advanced courses like yachtmasters.


Course Description

The RYA VHF Radio course covers  the basics of radio operation, the correct frequencies (channels) to be used. Distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures, making ship to shore telephone calls.

Digital Selective Calling (DSC) using simulators, Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB), Search and Rescue (SART)

  • 1 Day (10 hrs – course material supplied prior to course as some self study is required)
  • Classes at V&A, Waterfront. Cape Town, South Africa.
  • RYA VHF license upon successful completion of exam (exam fee payable to the RYA: £60.00)

*this license is not for local waters and ICASA exam is necessary for those wishing to have acceptable radio licenses for use in South Africa.
